Music has long been an integral part of storytelling and thereby filmmaking; it is often a film’s defining theme song that then becomes a generational icon. With the Academy Awards rapidly approaching next weekend, Billboard reminds us of some of the most iconic tunes launched by the “silver screen.”

The list positions are based on “actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart. …To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from each era, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years.”

The rankings include classics like “Don’t You Forget About Me,” “Maniac,” “I will Always Love You,” “Endless Love,” and many, many more. Visit here to read the entire list as well as fun facts about each track, and to find out the #1 chart-topping movie tune of all.
