MTV Teammates Help Make a Difference With “Outstanding PSA Campaign”

NEW YORK: David Hnatiuk, co-author of the industry-leading book “Music Supervision: Selecting Music for Movies, TV, Games and New Media” was part of an award-winning team at the 2007 POP Awards. Hnatiuk, Director Barry Flanagan, and an all-star cast of his teammates at MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation captured the top award in the category of “Outstanding PSA Campaign” for the :40 spot, “Be An Authority”.
The POP Awards are produced by Cable Positive, the cable and telecommunications industry’s AIDS action organization.
In the humorous but sobering spot, a teenage son turns the tables on his father with a late-night heart-to-heart talk about safe sex. The spot effectively drives home the campaign’s message: that people aged 25 and under have lived their whole lives in a world where AIDS is an issue, having never known a time without it. As a result, in many ways, young people are more of an authority on the subject than their parents. The “Be an Authority” campaign is empowers kids to educate those they love about sexual health – even if that means talking to their parents about their sex lives.
"It's the only award I've ever won for writing/directing, so it's definitely the highlight of my career,” says Director Barry Flanagan. “More than anything, it was just really nice to get to do something that hopefully helped folks make good sexual decisions.”
"I was instantly inspired by this campaign,” adds Hnatiuk, who served as Music Supervisor on the spot. “It's fresh, smart and attention grabbing. We spent a lot of time choosing, editing, and placing the music for these spots -- more time than usual, in fact. The mix was intensive too. In the end, I love what we accomplished, and I've been proud of it since the minute we finished. Who knew it would be recognized on such an important humanitarian level? If these spots have touched lives, I'm satisfied and proud."
"Back when Barry pitched this campaign, I remember thinking that it was a clever idea, and a great opportunity to make some unique spots,” says Tim Kafalas, Editor for the campaign. “The end product was something we were very proud of, but it wasn’t until the POP awards that I realized what we were doing for fun actually turned out to be something positive and impactful for our audience."
